c. 1150 AD Southern Paiutes moved into So. Nevada, S. W. UtR- h, & No. Arizona
1100^ | fuman & Pueblo type cultures replaced in West by a Shoshonean pattern.
Middle 1100s.
1605 Earliest historic reference to So. Paiutes— An exploratory expedition
under Don Juan de Onate.
1626 Earliest reference to So. Utes— by Spaniards.
1637 Earliest known Spanish conflict with Utes. Under Governor Luis de Rosas
( 1637- lolil), Spanish captured about 80 Utacas & forced to labor
workshops in Santa Fe.
1670 First Ute treaty with Spaniards arranged by the 1670s which was probably
still in effect when the Pueblo Rebellion broke out in l § pO.
1. Spanish expelled for 12 years by the rebellion.
1692 An alliance between Paiutes, Apaches, Coeninas, & Hopis— to counter
Spanish aggression.
169k Above alliance made joint attack against Zuni.
c. 1626 Traditional Ute- Hopi conflict— began sometime before 1626 with high
point during Pueblo Rebellion.
1700 Early 1700s saw Ute, Apache, Pueblo Indians, & Comanches alliance-
Raids upon all groups in No. N. M.
1716 Spanish campaign against Utes & Comanches— not very successful.
1730 Utes continue southern raidd through 1730s & 17U0s.
17U7 Spanish campaign against Capote Utes.
1751* Utes have driven out all Navajos in upper San Juan drainage.
17l| 6 Spanish defeat Ute- Comanche groups aboue Abiquiu.
c. 1752 Don Thomas, Chiquito, Barrigon meet with governor of N. M.— Spanish wish
to cultivate Ute trade in deerskins to avoid confrontation of a
Chaguaguas, Moache, & Capote enemy.
175U Moache Utes enter alliance with Jicarilla Apaches
1760 After 1760s Spanish- Ute relations friendly enough to allow Spanish
trading ventures into Ute territory as far North as the Gunnison River.
1770s Utes & Navajos at war with Hopis.
1778 Spanish prohibit settlers & Christianized Indians from trading with Utes.
Ban ineffectual— however, some traders were brought to trial in 1785 & 1797.
