Ute and Paiute Legends 1873
After local villagers rescue their stolen daughter from Teu-gai (a witch), she brings her entire family to hide in the mouth of her grandfather, To-go-au (the rattlesnake). However, Teu-gai gets stuck, so To-go-au sheds his skin, leaving her stuck within for eternity. The origin of the echo is the sound of Teu-gai mocking travelers as she hides in the snake skin.
