Sir:
Having received circulars dated May 31 together with printed forms
for a census, and also for vocabularies and numerals, and copies of the
Historical inquiries etc. being two books in pamphlet and two blanks;
the receipt of which I take great pleasure in acknowledging. I shall be
able eventually to include much of the information solicited in my
reports, altho (sic) at present those things bring invariably connected
with considerable expense as well as all other intercourse with the
Indians and not having any funds at my control for that nor any other
purpose pertaining to the Indians must be my apology for not proceeding in
the matter more extensively and immediately. I send by the bearer, Elder
Orson Pratt a citizen of this city, and one of our people a few sketches
of some of the principal chiefs, and head men, taken at various times
by Proffesor (sic) W. W. Major of this City, although not as good as I
could wish, will you give you a tolerable correct view of those repreĀsented;
they were principally taken during my trip South, during the months
of April and May last. The reason of my anticipating the mail is a more
favorable opportunity of sending them by private conveyance; copies have been
retained and may hereafter be again furnished with improvements. We have
had a three weeks sojourn of Washochkick and Tootoomitch, Chiefs of the
Shoshone's with their bands, seeking to make peace with Walker and the
Utahs, which being finally accomplished they have all departed, more of
the particulars will appear in my report for next mail.
