Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-Growing up in Lehi, Utah, Richard Van Wagoner's interest in local history was fanned by the enthusiasm of his mother, Gayle Smith Julian Van Wagoner. Gayle, an avid genealogist and descendent of several pioneer families, walked her sons about town on numerous occasions, pointing out to them important buildings and historic sites while regaling them with memorable anecdotes. A richly rewarding Lehi High School American history course taught by Dean Welch further bolstered Van Wagoner's interest in history. While serving an LDS mission to the Central States, where much Mormon history took place, his love for history became even stronger. After marrying Mary Carter and continuing his education at Brigham Young University, however, Van Wagoner obtained a master's degree in clinical audiology. Van Wagoner has authored more than a dozen audiology articles which have been published in various professional journals. He is also an avid Mormon historical researcher and writer. Content Description +/-The Richard S. Van Wagoner papers (1830-1987) contain a record of Van Wagoner's historical research and writing. The bulk of the collection consists of Van Wagoner's research files, which he divided into two categories, "People" and "Subjects." People files may contain information pertaining to the individual noted on the folder, or copies of papers, articles, or books written by the individual. Subjects files typically contain copies of papers (both published and unpublished) which relate to the designated topic, newspaper clippings, copies or typescripts of journals, the author's research notes, or copies of secondary source material. Drafts of manuscripts and correspondence are also in the collection. Collection Use +/-Restrictions on Access: Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged. Materials must be used on-site.
