A studio photograph of Mary Edith Newitt Smith. In this photograph she is standing. She was the 1st superintendent of St. Mark's Hospital and was appointed in 1894 at the age of 23. She is wearing her nursing uniform complete with her nursing cap and her hair is pulled upon her head. The apron and skirt of her uniform is light colored; however, her blouse is a darker color and is patterned. A dark colored Maltese cross with a chain and key is attached to her waistband. A pair of scissors is also stuffed into the waistband. The background is whitewashed creating Mary Smith as the focal point of the photograph.
