Description
The Execution of John D. Lee. (Age 65) Photo by Fennemore, 1877. At the extreme left U. S. Marshal Wm. Nelson; Lee sitting on his coffin. Beside him, in a wide-brimmed hat, the Rev. Stokes, a Methodist minister, to whom it is said Lee confessed in the last moments of his life to having killed five persons on 'Shameful Friday.' The man standing next to the minister, Gibbs says is Josiah Robertson a reporter for one of the newspapers. The large man at the extreme right is standing by the wagon, from the sides of which blankets had been dropped shutting out the identity of the men behind them who firing the shots which killed Lee. Among this group of INVITED onlookers were US District Attorney Howard, Scipio A. Kenner, an old-time 'pencil shover,' and others. Behind them barely glimpsed between figures, may be seen riflemen standing. (It is my thought that Apostle Ivins was not in the foreward group, that close to proceedings.) In the far distance, middle right, some sons of John D. Lee on horseback may be seen, kept at a safe distance away.
