Subject Canyon; ditch; diversion; drop structure; headgate; pipe
Description A.O. Whitmore first diverted water near Coalpit Gulch to generate electricity for charging batteries for his Baker Electric car franchise. Later he used the water to power compressors for mining and timber production, including the excavation of the LDS temple vaults. Whitmore Oxygen Co. also produced electricity to electrostatically separate hydrogen and oxygen. Currently the hydropower produced from this private diversion is used on site and the excess electricity flows into PacifiCorp's grid.
