Even though there are risks building on a flood plain, homes located in mouths of Wasatch Front canyons are high priced real estate. Once water leaves the canyons, its no longer part of the watershed, and the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities has no say in residential development on the flood plain. Runoff from streets and yards can carry waste and chemicals into the creek.
