Emigrants heading west on the California Trail had to cross the Jordan River. A sign marks the spot of the Hastings Cutoff, a supposed short cut hyped by Lansford Hastings that proved disastrous for pioneers swayed by his self-serving promotion, as the cutoff led to the Great Salt Lake mudflats, where wagons became bogged down.
