Description Roadometer built in 1876 by Thomas G. Lowe to measure distances between villages in Arizona. Often mistaken for early odometer conceived by William Clayton and made by Appleton Harmon in 1847. Suggested by William Clayton, of the Mormon Pioneer Party enroute to Utah, May 8, 1847 - Clayton had measured the wagon wheel and found it to turn 360 times per mile. He had also actually counted the revolutions of the wheel - more than four thousand turns - while traveling 11 1/4 miles that day. Appleton Harmon made the gadget May 11-12 and put it into service on the 12th, so Clayton counted miles instead of turns of the wheel. On May 16, Harmon attached an extra gear to report every 10 miles - and cased the entire roadometer to protect it against the weather.
