Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-The history of the Provo Community Congregational Church began with a young school teacher, Emily Clapp. The New West Educational Commission, concerned with the lack of formalized education in Utah, sent Clapp to establish a free public school. As well as teaching regular academic classes, Clapp was also expected to set up a Sunday School. Ministers were soon sent for the Sunday School. Due to increasing student numbers, a new building was built and named the Proctor Academy. By 1919, Utah public schools were all offering free education, so Proctor Academy closed its doors. That same year, all Methodist and Congregational churches in Provo came together to form the Provo Community Congregational Church and is now one of the congregations in the United Church of Christ, focusing on community and youth programs and activities. Content Description +/-The Provo Community Congregational Church records (1883-1986) consist of the records of various church-sponsored organizations, board and committee materials, Sunday bulletins, minutes, financial records, correspondence, histories, and miscellaneous papers. The addendum to the collection contains the personal papers of Glen Halbe and sermons given in the 1980s. Collection Use +/-Restrictions on Access: Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged.
