Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-Albert Ray Olpin was born June 1, 1898 in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He received an A.B. in Physics from Brigham Young University in 1923 and a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University in 1930. He served as President of the University of Utah from 1946 to 1964. Olpin died on March 7, 1983. Content Description +/-The majority of this collection consists of typewritten journals kept by Albert Ray Olpin while he served as President of the University of Utah. The main portion of the journals deals specifically with his work as President. Included are accounts of meetings with the Board of Regents, the Athletic Board, and other bodies, as well as with committees and individual administrators. Many of the entries give his impressions of events and personalities. Principal subjects are campus planning, college sports, minority student recruitment, women's issues, and relations with other Utah universities. A portion of the journals deals with the private lives of members of the Olpin family. Also included, are ten handwritten diaries in which Olpin described his extensive travels in Asia, Europe, and Africa.
