Dr Swinyard was born in Logan, Utah in 1906. Dr Swinyard received both his B.S. (1928) and M.S (1929) from Utah State College. Dr Swinyard received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1934 and his M.D. from the State University of New York in 1951. Dr Swinyard was Carleton Research Fellow in Anatomy from 1935-1936 and Instructor in Anatomy, 1936-1937 at Tufts College Medical School. Dr Swinyard was Associate Professor of Anatomy at the Medical College of South Carolina (1937-1938); Assistant Professor (1938-1940). Dr Swinyard was Associate Professor of Anatomy at the University from 1940-1949. Dr Swinyard was Chair of the Department of Anatomy, 1944-1949. Dr. Swinyard became interested in physical medicine and rehabilitation and undertook a second Residency at the Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in New York City (19501-1952). Upon completion, Dr Swinyard established a physical medicine and rehabilitation program at the Salt Lake County General Hospital in 1952. Dr Swinyard also established the Alcoholism Clinic at the University of Utah in 1953. Dr. Swinyard was instrumental in obtaining funding for the University of Utah Rehabilitation Center as part of the new University of Utah Medical Center which opened in 1965. Dr. Swinyard left the university in 1958 to join the faculty at the New York University Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr Swinyard died in 1997. |
