Description Dr Detmer was born in Great Bend, Kansas in 1939. Dr Detmer received his M.D. from the University of Kansas in 1965. Dr Detmer trained as a surgical resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Duke University Medical Center (1965-1967). Dr Detmer was the first health policy Fellow at the Institute of Medicine (1972-1973). Dr Detmer served a joint appointment in preventive medicine and surgery at the University of Wisconsin where he was Assistant Professor (1973-1977); Associate Professor (1977-1980) and Professor (1980-1984). Dr Detmer came to the University in 1984 serving as Vice President for Health Sciences and Professor of Surgery and Medical Informatics until 1988. Dr Detmer was instrumental in developing, along with Dr Homer Warner, the University of Utah's Health Evaluation through Logical Processing (HELP) Hospital Information System. Dr Detmer left the University to become Vice President for Health Sciences and Professor of Surgery and Business Administration at the University of Virginia from 1988-1992. Dr Detmer became University Professor in the Health Sciences (1993) and Senior Vice President (1996). From 1989 to 1991, Dr Detmer served as Chair of the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine. Dr Detmer was Chair of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics for HHS from 1996 to 1996. Dr Detmer was president and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Assoication from 2004-2009. Dr Detmer earned an M.A. from Cambridge University in 2002. Dr Detmer is Professor Emeritus and Professor of Medical Education at the University of Virginia and Visiting Professor at the Centre for Health Informatics and Multiprofessional Education at University College, London. Dr Detmer was named Medical Director of the American College of Surgeons Division of Advocacy and Health Policy in 2011.
