Description University Medical Center, 1969.  Job one was ensuring that the brilliant people who worked in building 521 would be able to continue their efforts at a financially solvent academic medical center. But by 1970, the hospital was saddled with an operating deficit of $650,000. The challenge of resuscitating the faltering institution was given to John Reinertsen. Immediately after he started Reinerstsen began revamping billings to provide operating income for the hospital and negotiating with the state to obtain working capital. By the end of 1972, the financial picture had already begun to brighten. Within just two years, Reinertsen and his team had put the hospital's capital reserve fund into the black - where it has remained ever since.
