Description University Library Director, 1906-1941. Esther Nelson received her A.M. from the University of Utah in 1899, her Bachelor of Library Science from New York State Library School in 1906 and her M.A. in Library Science from the University of Michigan. She became Assistant Librarian in 1899 and Librarian in 1906. In 1929 she was full professor and she retired in 1941. During her administration, the library moved from the Liberal Arts Building (Cowles Bldg) to the Administration Building (Park Bldg) and then in 1935 to the George Thomas Library. She is credited with establishing a policy of hiring only trained librarians and securing direct acquisitions money for the library rather than through departments.
