Description |
John Theodore Pope was born in 1860. He came to the Uinta Basin in 1884. In 1895 he became the first city marshal and sheriff, at the same time. Pope was sheriff during the worst outlaw times and had to kill many men to enfore the law and protect himself. Cattle rustlers and local outlaws also contributed to his problems. He was one of the first men to become interested in rock asphalt and perfected formulas using the product for roofing hundreds of area homes and businesses. He was successful in extracting the "gum" from sand asphalt for paving in Vernal. Sheriff Pope died on January 1, 1943 at age 83. |
