For the diagnosis of osteoporosis, methods which determine the bone mass are used by the aid of ionizing radiation (Dexa, SPA, SXA), or non-ionizing radiation (Ultrasound). Three hundred people have been examined in our center by ultrasound of the heel, simultaneously with 10 Dexa measurements. The occurrence of osteoporosis in Cyprus is about 35.6%. There are young menstruating females who suffer from osteoporosis (15%). Also, there are overweight people, not just thin people, who suffer from osteoporosis. The ultrasound of the heel appears to be the most proper method for the initial examination for osteoporosis.
