Title Maternal utilization of educational handouts
Date 1994-08
Description This study examined mothers' utilization of educational handouts and learning retention. It compared demographic data and utilization of handouts. Opinions of how helpful information about development issues and if the study handout was useful were gathered. Mothers' sources for answers regarding development questions were collected. Data were collected at the well-child visit and 5 to 8 days later via telephone. Data were analyzed using frequencies and analysis of variance. The findings indicate half of mothers read the educational material and one fourth implemented the suggestions in the article. There was minimal difference in demographic variables between readers and nonreaders. Data indicated mothers rely on personal experience when making decisions regarding developmental issues. Health care providers need to be aware of the limitations of using educational handouts and of the minimal role that demographics play in handout utilization. Providers must use a variety of educational techniques when teaching mothers about developmental issues.
