Description Chronic kidney disease (CKD) rates continue to rise in the United States. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for half of all deaths in patients with end stage renal disease. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an indicator of inflammation and is a recognized predictor of CVD. Recent evidence supports an inverse relationship between dietary fiber and CRP in healthy populations and populations with chronic disease, but its association with inflammation in CKD has not been thoroughly explored. Dietary fiber is generally restricted in dialysis patients. It is unknown if dietary fiber could play a role in reducing CRP in CKD patients.
