Title Correlation of tuff layers in the Green River Formation, Utah, using biotite compositions
Date 1974
Description Concentrations of Mn, Ni, Cr, Fe, Mg, and Ti in biotites from 28 samples of tuffs from the Green River Formation of Utah, have been used in this study as correlation tools. Tuffs are commonly used as strati- graphic correlation marker beds in the Green River Formation of Utah. Previous studies by Desborough and others (1973) have shown that some major elements, FeO, MgO, and Ti02 in biotites in Green River Formation tuffs provide a satisfactory geochemical test of stratigraphic correlations. Comparisons of various element ratios using F tests, Tucky tests, diagrammatic tests, and discriminant analyses using density functions show that the three ratios Mn/Fe+Kg, Mn/Ti, and FeO/MgO are the most easily determined and useful ratios for tuff correlations. These ratios can be demonstrated to provide a better means of discriminating individual tuff layers than the FeO/MgO and Ti02 method of Desborough and others (1973).
