Title Bench-scale flash reduction of iron ore concentrate
Date 2008-12
Description A bench-scale facility was used to carry out a simulated suspension reduction process with hydrogen. Experiments were performed at 1150°C, which is the highest reaction temperature that can be reached in the current facility. The iron oxide concentrates (FG3O4) provided by Ternium with a mean particle size of 34|j.m were used in the experiments. The products were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The trend in the change of the reduction rate was observed at five different residence times: 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, and 5.5 seconds. The reduction extent was at 21, 29, and 43% when the residence time increased from 3.5 seconds to 4 and 4.5 seconds, respectively, with 0% excess H2 and approached about 95% with 860% excess H2. The reduction extent at a longer residence time was always higher while the excess H2 ranged from 0 to 860% and only 0.5 second difference made a notable difference in the reduction rate. SEM analysis revealed the evolution of microstructure changes of samples. Experiments were also carried out to test the use of syngas (a mixture of CO and H2 within a range of compositional ratio from 1:1 to 1:3) in terms of the reduction of iron oxide concentrate and the effect of the CO/H2. About 90% reduction accomplished in 3.5 seconds at 860% excess hydrogen demonstrated a sufficiently fast reduction rate and the feasibility of using syngas instead of pure hydrogen before hydrogen becoming cheap. The results obtained in the tests clearly demonstrated the kinetic feasibility of the suspension process but large scale tests in this type of bench-scale or an industrial pilot reactor at considerably higher temperatures are needed to completely the commercial feasibility of this suspension reduction technology. An idea concerning the fabrication of an internal gas burner system is briefly discussed to solve the technical hurdle on how to supply extra heat to the current bench-scale system.
