Tyler Just as the University of Utah welcomed a new president, Arthur K. Smith, Ph. D., this summer, the health sciences center announced several administrative changes. Walter Stevens, Ph. D., was named acting vice president for health sci-ences, replacing William A. Gay, Jr., M. D., who returned to his position as professor and chair of the Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine. Dr. Stevens, professor of anatomy and research professor of pharmacology, has served as interim dean of the medical school since August 1988. He will continue to serve as associate dean for research. A Salt Lake City native, Dr. Stevens has been a member of the Utah faculty since 1962, when he received his doctor-ate in anatomy from the U. His many University activities have included serving as chair of the Institutional Review Board and as a member of the Board of Scientific Advisors and the medical center's Clinical Research Center Advisory Committee. Taking over as acting dean of the School of Medicine is Frank H. Tyler, M. D., professor of internal medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Tyler previously served as acting dean from 1971- 72. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Tyler joined the Utah faculty in 1947 as the first chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, a position he held until 1981. From 1965- 77, Dr. Tyler directed the medical school's Clinical Research Center. He also has served on numer-ous National Institutes of Health ( NIH) board and councils, and has been active in professional societies and on University committees.
