Description Morbid obesity is a risk factor for the development of acute postoperative rhabdomyolysis (RML). RML is the result of skeletal muscle injury and is associated with multiple causes and differential diagnoses. This case report describes the events of a morbidly obese, 52 year-old female patient following a right knee arthroscopy. On postoperative day one this patient presented with generalized myalgia, elevated creatine kinase (CK) levels, and a decrease in renal function. The patient presented with multiple risk factors for developing RML prior to surgery. This case report reviews risk factors, causes, diagnostic criteria, and treatment of acute RML.
