Description Emergency contraception (EC) is a safe and effective, FDA approved, over the counter birth control option for women. As such it should be an integral component of women's reproductive education. It is particularly important for healthcare providers to be knowledgeable about product use and to be aware of current political issues in place that are affecting access to EC. Nurse practitioners have a responsibility to educate their patients regarding all birth control options and to speak comfortably and sensitively about these matters. Being cognizant of all barriers in place that may affect EC access has been an issue among primary care providers. This paper will discuss the societal struggles EC has faced in becoming an acceptable birth control method.
