Title Community School Coordinators: Lessons in Leadership and Program Sustainability

Description Salt Lake City School District currently supports three community learning centers, or community schools. Community schools provide programs within neighborhood schools that are not provided by traditional public schools. The Salt Lake City School District's community schools provide afterschool classes, mental health services, adult learning opportunities, and host medical clinics. In order to answer the question "How does the leadership of the coordinator affect the development of sustainable programs and resources in a community school?" I interviewed these three coordinators. The interviews revealed that each coordinator utilized a unique leadership style, and that these leadership styles were all consistent with sustainability, but in different ways. These leadership styles support sustainability by giving underserved populations the voice to advocate for and invest in programing, by cultivating indigenous leadership with the ability to create and support their own programing, and by supporting relationships with community partners.
