Content Description +/-

This collection consists of a single issue of the newspaper The Blurb, dated January 6, 1946. It is unknown whether The Blurb continued to be published by the unidentified "One Man Staff", presumable a student of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The paper runs three pages in length and includes a cartoon and advertisements for three local businesses (Bryan Pharmacy (11th E. & 17th S.), Bailey Snappy Service (17th S. 11th E.), and Fashion Cleaners & Dyers (1597 S. 11th E.)). The first unsigned editorial described the essence of the newspaper as being in direct competition with the already established newspaper, The Campus crier. The writer suggests that the Crier is unreliable and is published sporadically at best. Another problem covered by author is the lack of articles dealing with the everyday life of the students on the Westminster campus. "The new Blurb was not evolved to improve your mind, present ponderous items of social significance, or provide Chapel reading material ... ". The "One Man Staff" also solicits other clubs and interested persons to contribute by writing for the newspaper.

Other articles include a humorous piece on the beginning of spring semester highlighting some of the more extreme personalities that can be found around the campus. Another piece entitled "Ex 'G.I.' Jive" relates the story of a man in the military stationed in Burma where the G.I.s imagined they were buying precious gems for great prices when really the locals were stealing broken landing lights (red and green), polishing them, and selling them back to the men as precious stones. The basketball game announcement rings true to The Blurb's mission statement of being more closely connected with the activities occurring on campus.

The last sentence of the paper says "Keep this copy of Blurb, it is a first edition original". However, no other issues of the publication can be located. It is unknown whether The Blurb continued to publish, or if this was the only issue ever published.

This newspaper, as well as the other newspapers published on campus, were microfilmed in the spring of 2002 in conjunction with The Forum newspaper office. However, large gaps remain a problem in achieving a truly complete collection. Newspapers were microfilmed according to the calendar year they were published, not according to volume or issue number.
