Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

Westminster College chief academic officers: Over the years, the title of the chief academic officer of Westminster College has changed. From 1901-1976, 16 men served as the Dean (of the College) charged with overseeing faculty affairs as part of their duties. Beginning in 1981, the title changed to "Academic Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty", and in 2003 to "Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs".

Sheldon Jackson College (Salt Lake City, Utah) was in existence from 1895-1901. Robert Gibson McNiece was the Dean from 1897 through the 1901 transition to Westminster College, thus serving as the first dean of Westminster College from 1901-1913. Below is a partial list of the various men who have served as the chief academic officer:

This collection consists of minutes (approved and unapproved) and memoranda of the Academic Council of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. The materials date from 1976-1981.

The earliest minutes in the collection are dated May 18, 1976 with "Dr. Hofman" (i.e. Helmut P. Hofmann, 16th Dean) presiding. By the next meeting (September 1976, Dr. Yoder was presiding, and he continued to preside through the school year. Topics covered in the 1976/77 meetings included course approvals, resignations, promotions, a curriculum proposal from the Education Department, payment of work study students, an honor society, and credit/no credit policies.

Begining with the October 4, 1977 meeting and continuing through 1979, Dale Johnston presided. By 1979 a report on the dire fiscal situation of the College was presented and "retrenchment" discussions and recommendations appear in the minutes.

The May 27, 1980 meeting was presided over by Dennis Van Avery, Acting Vice-President for Academic Affairs. The final minutes in the collection are dated April 9, 1981 and were submitted by Douglas W. Steeples.

The minutes include the date and meeting time, council members present and excused, a summary of the proceedings including announcements made, actions and votes taken, reports, received, adjournment time, and announcement of next meeting date and time. The memoranda include an undated "Proposed Statement of Purpose for Westminster College" sent from the Curriculum Committee to the Academic Council.
