Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

The Salt Lake Collegiate Institute was founded in 1875 by the First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City, opening it the church's basement on April 12, 1875 as a Presbyterian Preparatory school. In 1896 the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions assumed ownership and administrative control of the institute, and maintained operations until 1910, when it transferred the property to Westminster College, where the institute had became the "Preparatory Department" of Westminster College.

In November 1895, a Presbyterian college was incorporated in Salt Lake City. In 1897 college courses were taught within the Sheldon Jackson College, named after well-known Presbyterian minister, missionary, and primary benefactor. Jackson had pledged $50,000 to the College, but when he was unable to fulfill his commitment the college obtained funds from William and Jeannette Ferry and changed its name to Westminster College in 1902. In 1945 high school courses were discontinued and in 1974 the school unaffiliated itself with the Presbyterian Church.

Content Description +/-

This collection consists of teachers' grade books, dating 1895-1928, from Sheldon Jackson College and Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. As there are no institutional identifications on the books, it is unclear if any of the grade books are from the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute or from the Preparatory Department of Westminster College.

These small blank books were filled in and maintained by instructors recording the grades of individual students attending different courses offered. Entries include the title of the class, the student's name, and grades for various assignments. Each file also has a handwritten and typed list of class titles and student names, created earlier by an unidentified collection processor(s) in attempting to index and arrange the content of the books.

Class titles include: Algebra, American literature, Anabasis, Analysis and pairing, Arithmetic, Bible, Bookkeeping, Botany, Caesar, Chemistry, Chorus, Cicero, Civics, Classics, College algebra, Commercial arithmetic, Commercial law, Domestic science, Drawing, Economics, English, English composition, English history, English literature, French, General history, General science, Geometry, German, German history, Grammar, Greek, History, Iliad, Latin, 19th century authors, Pedagogy, Physical geography, Physics, Physiology, Plane geometry, Rhetoric, Rhetoricals, U.S. history, Shorthand, Solid geometry, Spelling, and Zoology.

Robert J. Caskey's 1901-1902 gradebook (Box 2, Folder 5) records classes in geometry, German, Bible, and rhetoricals. Caskey was principal of the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute from 1892-1904. Herbert Ware Reherd's 1914-1915 gradebook (Box 3, Folder 14) records classes in Bible studies. Reherd, a Presbyterian minister, was the 4th president of Westminster College, serving from 1913-1939.
