Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges: The Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges was earlier called the Northwest Assocation of Secondary and Higher Schools, and later called the Northwest Associaton of Schools and of Colleges and Universities. Within the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges organization is a subordinate "Commission on Colleges".

Westminster College: In November 1895, a Presbyterian college was incorporated in Salt Lake City. In 1897 college courses were taught within the Sheldon Jackson College, named after well-known Presbyterian minister, missionary, and primary benefactor. Jackson had pledged $50,000 to the College, but when he was unable to fulfill his commitment the college obtained funds from William and Jeannette Ferry and changed its name to Westminster College in 1902. In 1945 high school courses were discontinued and in 1974 the school unaffiliated itself with the Presbyterian Church. In 1983 the name was changed to Westminster College of Salt Lake City, and in 1998 changed back to Westminster College.

Content Description +/-

This collection consists of the official accreditation records for Westminster College (Salt Lake City, Utah) as a part of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The materials date from 1947-1993.

The earliest document in the collection is the Westminster College Statement of Critera preparing for The Commission on Higher Schools of the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools, dated October 1947 (Box 1, Folder 1). The next document is a letter, dated April 12, 1957 from Dean Joseph N. Uemura, listing assignments for writing the college's self-evaluation. This letter went out to President Duddy, Mr. Gunn (treasurer), Mr. Morris, John G. Church (librarian), Mr. Clark, Mr. Pontz, deans, two professors, and Coach Mercer (Box 1, Folder 2). There is a letter in 1977 from Kenneth E. Young (Council on Postsecondary Accreditation) to "all accredited institutions" (Box 1, Folder 11). The last document in the collection is a self-study report dated 1993 (Box 3, Folder 9).

The collection contains both incoming and outgoing reports and correspondence, documenting a dialogue between Westminster College administration and the accrediting agencies. There are college self-study reports for the years 1957, 1964, 1970, 1981 and 1993. Represented in the correspondence files are letters to and from college presidents Duddy, Hofmann, Petersen, Arbogast, and Cornell, as well as Dean Uemura and Dean Ballenger. The most common accrediting correspondent is James F. Bemis, Executive Director of the Commission on Higher Schools of the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools (in 1966) and of the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (in 1979). These name changes represent the organizational reformation of the accreditation body.
