Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

The Westminster College campus is located in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. The initial land for the campus was a 21-acre plat in "Perkin's Grand View Addition" just east of 1100 East, cornered at 1300 East and 1700 South (called Eleventh South at the time), and extending south to Emigration Creek. The campus land was purchased and deeded to the College in March 1902 by benefactors Colonel William Montgomery Ferry and his wife Jeannette Hollister Ferry of Park City, Utah. Gunton Memorial Chapel (dedicated 1905) was the first building erected, but a decision was made to build it off campus on an additional 2 acres (at 1100 East and 1800 South, near the northwest corner of the campus acreage. The first building erected on the campus itself was Converse Hall (built 1906-1907). The groundbreaking ceremony for a dormitory (later named Ferry Hall) took place in October 1907.

Payne Gymnasium (dedicated January 1929) was built with support from F.R. Payne, a local businessman and president of the Board of Trustees. Dane Hansen Stadium, built in 1949, was a gift from the George Hansen family in memory of Lieutenant Dane Hansen, class of 1940, who was killed in World War II. The same year, a science building was completed with support from the James A. Hogle family. Originally opened in September, 1949 during the presidency of Robert D. Steele (1939 to 1952), the building was later named the Charles H. Dick Science Building in honor of Westminster's 14th college president (1985-1995).

Under the presidency of Michael Bassis the campus boundaries were expanded, with the 2009 purchased of Garfield School (1838 South 1500 East) and the building of Westminster-on-the-Draw (located just south of 2100 South on 1330 East, it will consist of a 6-story combination of student housing (upper levels), retail (main level), and classroom space (lower level).

A current map of the Westminster College campus, with a list of 44 campus buildings linked to descriptions and images of each building is accessible online: Westminster campus map.

Content Description +/-

This collection contains programs and invitations to dedications and other opening ceremonies for various new and renovated buildings, special rooms or areas on the Westminster College campus, Salt Lake City, Utah. The materials in the collection date from 1905-2002. Programs include listings of events, speaker profiles, and lists of donors, contributors, and current Board of Trustees members. Renovation and rededication records feature the building's history. Dedication services often include the biography and accomplishments of the individual for whom the building is being named. The dedication ceremonies often included musical performances and readings, and a variety of other activities. For example, the Fall 1949 dedication of the Dane Hansen Memorial Stadium occurred during the Westminster Homecoming football game, and Jewett Center for the Performing Arts Dedication included several Spring 1991 musical performances.

The earliest item included in the collection was created for the 1905 dedication of the Gunton Memorial Chapel, located near the Westminster campus (at the southeast corner of the intersection of 1700 South and 1100 East), reflecting the school's strong ecclesiastical ties. Another booklet on the renovation of Ferry Hall does not provide a list of events related to the building; however, it does include the history of Ferry Hall, sectional drawings of the building, intended modifications, and a schedule of the expenses for the project. The collection provides insight to the growth, as well as structural and ideological changes, of Westminster College over its first century of existence.
