Content Description +/-

This collection consists of issues of the Career Services newsletter published between 1981 and 1986 and distributed to students by the Career Services Office of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The entire collection is comprised of 45 issues published over a five-year term. Initially, the newsletter was published on a bimonthly basis beginning January 14, 1981; this schedule continued for three months. However, the newsletter quickly changed to monthly in the spring of 1981, and was published throughout the year. Two months were combined into one issue in the summer of 1983, possibly due to lack of activity on campus. Several thematic elements run throughout the run. The newsletter is designed to inform students and prepare them to enter into the workforce after graduation. The majority of newsletters contain a listing of open internship opportunities and jobs around the Salt Lake Valley, as well as around the country. Job descriptions included job title, brief summaries of responsibilities and requirements, and expected salary. Listings from the University of Utah are also published in the recruitment section.

The publication often highlights the special services available to the student body, including: assessment tests, volunteer opportunities, and student workshops. The task of finding a job and deciding on a career plan are paramount in the newsletter. Tips on interviewing, writing a resume, and maintaining professionalism are frequent topics throughout. A regular section entitled "Finding Your Niche" centers on a specific occupation, listing requirements, responsibilities, and potential for growth in the future. The importance of planning ahead factors into every section of the newsletter, whether it is picking beneficial internships, applying for graduate school, or deciding which demographics could benefit the most from specific skills.

Issues often include a listing of dates of workshops and internships, and some include campus events and schedules. A few "special issues" focus on specific employment needs or current status of the national workforce (i.e., the need for females in the FBI, the inequity of earnings between genders, etc.). However, not all of the newsletters are strictly business; each issue addressed job searching, while creatively teaching the reader through a series of cartoons, graphs, charts, and maps that aided the display of statistics.

Gaps in the collection: It is clear there are missing issues from either May or June 1982 (one undated newsletter confuses the specifics) and December 1982. A large gap is also present between March 1983 and October 1984, with no explanation for the period missed. Some missing issues could be due to no publication activity during the slow summer or winter months; however, several busy school months remain absent. Other missing issues include: April, June, October, November of 1985, and May, June, July, August, October of 1986. It is uncertain whether any issues of the newsletter predate or postdate those held in the collection.

Processing Note:

Processed by Alana Dela Cruz in June 2004. Initially, the newsletter contained volume and issue numbers, but the practice was discontinued in March 1983. While some newsletters are undated, their contents assisted in determining their publication months. One could not be determined and was placed at the end of 1985, its publication year.
