Content Description +/-

This collection consists of issues of Newscope : bulletin of Westminster College, the primary news and information publication of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. The issues date from 1972-1988. It replaced The Utah Westminster (1907-1971) and was itself replaced by Westminster review in Fall 1988.

Originally titled Utah Westminster Newscope, the publication went through a series of size, look, style, and feature changes during its 16 years of publication. The volume and issue numbers that it assumed were continued from its predecessor (The Utah Westminster). The publication maintained the full moniker Utah Westminster Newscope from its first issue (Vol. 58, No. 2) only through the Winter publication in 1972-1973 (Vol. 59, No. 2). Afterwards, it was simply titled Newscope and subtitled Bulletin of Westminster College.

Numbering: Volume numbers were determined by school year, not calendar year, with the Fall issue being listed as the first issue in a volume, and Summer being its termination. Volume numbers were used from its inception until the 1979-1980 school year, when it switched to being published only four times a year. This might have been in response to the reality of its publication schedule. At the time of its first issue, Newscope was intended to be published five times yearly, as stated by the paper itself, with issues to be printed in Fall, Winter, Spring, May, and Summer. However, very few years contain all five issues. In fact, beginning with Volume 63 (1976-1977), issue number 4 was printed during the Summer, with May never appearing. Immediately to the left of the issue number, however, was the continued statement that Newscope was published five times a year. The statement was changed in the 1979-1980 school year. Also, because the Winter issues were published near the beginning of the new year, the year listed was sometimes after the new year, sometimes before. At times, it was listed as both (e.g., 1972-1973). Similarly, in 1981, the Fall and Winter issues were merged together into one issue, making only three issues that year.

Of particular interest is how the physical appearance of Newscope over the years refects the changing fortunes of the school itself. The quality of paper on which Newscope was printed, as well as the page size, changed numerous times over the years (in Winter 1975, Winter 1979, Fall 1980, Spring 1981, Spring 1982, Spring 1986). Financial hardships at the college were also reflected in the change from five issues to four.

The features of Newscope remained largely the same from year to year. The primary thrust of the publication was to offer news and information about the college. Additionally, it was intended to keep alumni connected to the college and each other, offering information about graduates in a section called "Alumnews." It had sections devoted to sports, alumni donors, and alumni profiles, with newsworthy information about graduates of the school. One feature of interest began to appear with Volume 61, Number 3 called initially "Emil Nyman's Reflections", and later "I Remember." A graduate of the college in 1909 and for years the college archivist, Mr. Nyman reflected on anything and everything, but primarily about the College's history. His segment continued until his death, as reported in the Summer 1982 issue, which contained both his last reflection and a report on his life and death.

Newscope was replaced in the 1988-1989 school year with the Westminster review, a nice, glossy publication designed to demonstrate the success the college had begun to enjoy.

Gaps in the collection: There are a number of gaps in the collection. Not all gaps are easily identified, as some may be due to a deficiency in the collection of all issues, while others may be due to the fact that some issues were simply never produced.

Known missing issues not located at Westminster College include the following: Vol. 59, No. 5; Vol. 60, Nos. 1, 4, 5; Vol. 61, Nos. 1-2; 1979-1980, Fall and Summer; 1987, Winter.

Gaps in the publication schedule (when apparently no issue was published), include the following: Vol. 58, May; Vol. 63, No. 5; Vol. 64, No. 5; Vol. 65, No. 5.
