Description Recordings of bark beetles in a pinyon pine tree in New Mexico. Recorded using a modified transducer that was inserted into the bark of the tree. Recording is taken with permission of the author from the compact disc "The Sound of Light in Trees" produced by David Dunn in collaboration with the Acoustic Ecology Institute. Scientists say that bark beetle populations are on the rise and are devastating pine forests throughout the western United States. The cause, scientists say, is increased drought and milder winters due to global warming.
